Magazines sparked my interest in fashion. Eh no, I think it was that lady who owns a shop at Holland Village; she likes to wear fur coat (yes, in Singapore) and Cirque du Soleil make up while attending to my mum. Okay maybe that develop my liking for drag queens but I’m very certain that magazines were the reason why I like fashion. Magazines sparked my interest in fashion. Period.
Anyhow while packing my magazines for the new home, I kinda shed tears. Browsing at the archive, oh how much I’ve grown from teeney-booper reads to Vogue. My first Fashion Magazine (Stole it from my art class. I put it to good use OK! It’s not like as if the soccer-playing boys will read Vogue anyways.) was Australian Vogue March 2002. I think some pretty Revlon-looking model was on the cover. My first thoughts’ looking at Dolce & Gabbana Spring 2002 collection was: ‘Are they the designers for Posh Spice’. I know right, those prints, so vintage Mrs. Beckham. I thought it was tragic.
Soon I start buying local fashion Magazine (style: issue 34) , I thought International magazines were too costly since I only get five dollars per day allowance. (I live right across my school and a burger cost a dollar) I had to not eat for a day (usually Fridays) to buy magazines. Style:men, a biyearly magazine that come free with style: was my favorite. On the cover was a pretty model in Gucci/ Louis Vuitton and on the inside, Colin Wee’s DKNY ad campaign. There, I had my first ‘wants’; it was Louis Vuitton Damier Monogram Teddy Bear Brooch.
Thinking about the past makes me so emotional! I used to hide my magazines and read it underneath my desk during psychics or chemistry. I still remember the day my teacher scream at me and said, “ You will never be successful and your work will never end up on those pages if you don’t pass your science! ”. He even put me out the class for a month. You know what, I’m having the last laugh because my work and me are now there.
The power of having dreams and working towards it, it’s fulfilling. Magazine are not just glossy pages, they are textbook to your future! Go magazines go! Fuck you ten-year series!

Despite the downfall of 2002, shoe mogul Steve Madden is still going strong. Opening its first outlet in Singapore was just the start of his many ventures, with plan to collaboration with Olsen Twins label, Elizabeth and James is the next step for the company.
The official opening kicks off with Style: Week, a fashion show organized by style: magazine and shoes by Steve Madden. It was humid and I almost died in my blazer but when I saw ‘free pair of shoes on us’ I was beginning to revive from my death very quickly.
A chat with Mr. John Madden and Ms. Gabriela sums up the whole event. He was stressing on Singapore’s hot weather, other than that, both of them completes the fun day at the event.
Besides women’s accessories, shoes for the men are also available at their store. (The PR told me that they do carry apparel in the states, so I hope it will come to Singapore soon!)

The photographer bestfriend (that’s his new title since he was mentioned in Strait Times Urban) Ridhwan, likes to do foolish thing and embarrasses me in the public. He just had to do that when our picture was taken! There was passerby mind you! I’m shameless most of the time but he never fails to make me blush! Just what I need after a long run down orchard road trying to get our hands on the August Issue of style: magazine! We were told that it’s going to be a spread but we didn’t expect it to be so huge!
So huge, that my mum had to whore the article at the park across our home. Like as if her Indonesian and Pilipino maid friends would care about my existence in a magazine.Hah. Maybe they can look at Colin Wee instead.
On that note, style: is my favorite local magazine ever but I’ve stop buying since Daniel left. In my opinion it was more personal then and in every Editor’s Note column he wrote, I feel like I was part of style: journey. Now, stories are getting better, very informative and most importantly current.
I beg you to buy the latest copy of style: and make it the best-selling issue ever! (Don’t forget to email style:, you’re buying because of us, not Joanne Peh. Haha) I’ve managed to convince my mum to get all the mature audiences to buy! (they might get another one if it comes with a free gift!)
